GIS (Geographic Information System)

The Health Department has purchased an ArcView 9 license and has begun to enter septic system data into map layers.  We already have a map of the septic systems installed in 2005 and one of 2004.  The 2005 systems were entered based on a GPS (Global Positioning System) reading taken at the distribution box.  The accuracy of the reading is usually around 30 feet.  For 2004 the septics were entered based on what data was available.  For a small percentage, GPS coordinates were available.  Most of the time a combination of address, soil map, plat map, and engineer's drawing were used to get the system placed reasonably close.

More updates are coming, but the process is slow.  It took 10-15 hours to create the 2004 map, which had the fewest installations in the past 10 years.  The plan is to enter the systems 1 year at a time.
